Day 3: BlacKkKlansman

Sometimes the only way we can attempt to understand why our world is the way we are is to backtrack and see where we came from and what happened before this.

Enter Spike Lee, whose voice has always been present in his work, and while aggressive isn’t the right word, but it’s enough to remind us that we’ve always been fucked up.

In BlacKkKlansman, we follow rookie detective Ron Stallworth as he infiltrates the KKK. Or The Organization, as they like to call it. The important part of that statement is that Ron is a black male. Alongside him on what should be a suicide mission is Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), his Jewish partner.

And this is based on a true story.

The story is so bizarre, it’s hard to believe. And for that, it feels like Spike Lee took a step back in what might be a bit more toned down film of his (25th Hour comes to mind). That being said, his fingerprints are all over this.

At one point in the film, Flip mentions how he wasn’t raised Jewish. So he never considered himself Jewish, but under these circumstances, it’s the only thing he can think of as of late. And that hit me.

I live in a shitty area. In the past 4 months, I’ve been jumped and more recently, was part of a hit and run with no witnesses around. But even with that in mind, I feel safe there. I don’t often run into discrimination for being a minority, so I don’t typically think of myself as one.

This film teaches us to be proud of our heritage, but respectful to each other. This shouldn’t be a war, or us vs them. It should just be us. It teaches us to fight back – but not necessarily to fight. Just fight back.
