Score of the Week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Apparently, I’ve been asked to do this again. So, here we are again folks! This time around I’m going to be tackling Star Wars: The Force Awakens, written and composed by John Williams. I remember first hearing that he had come back to score this film and I felt incredibly relieved. I know that another composer would have been capable of scoring Star Wars, but it’s always nice to have it come back into the hands of the man who helped make so many moments of this series incredible. I had a lot of trouble picking my top five for this because MAN! Did I love this score! But as much as I would want to talk about each of the tracks, I’m a lazy dude. Now, let’s jump into a galaxy far, far away (don’t you judge me… it’s a quality pun) [Admin’s note: Agree to disagree.] [Editor’s Note: I don’t even see what you’re punning on.] and talk about my top 5 tracks from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Main Title/ Attack on the Jakku Village

I mean, come on! Did you really think this wouldn’t be on the list? It’s the Star Wars theme! ‘Nuff said… oh wait, you actually wanted me to say something about it? Well I don’t get paid to do this, so no.

Kylo Ren Arrives at the Battle

I have to say, I think Kylo Ren’s theme is one of my favorites in this new series. Anytime I hear it, it just sounds amazing! This track is a nice mix of the old and new sounds of Star Wars.

March of the Resistance

I really enjoyed this track. It is a very rousing and heroic piece of music. It was used best when Poe and the other Resistance fighters came to the aid of Han, Chewbacca, and Finn in the assault on Maz Kanata’s hideout. William’s really captured the feeling of a call to arms.

Scherzo for X-Wings

This track was really filled with wonder and adventure. I can close my eyes and imagine myself piloting one of the X-Wing fighter jets, racing through space with lasers, explosions, and barrel rolls galore. It really gives you the feeling of child-like whimsy. Yes, I said whimsy. Bite me.

The Jedi Steps / Finale

Here, William’s accurately represents the longing and anticipation I felt over seeing Luke on screen. Easy and calming, and then slowly rising to a big reveal.* The final track is a great representation of the best the film has to offer.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Final Trailer Song

YEAH, I KNOW! I said 5 but I need to talk about this one. When I first heard they were doing a new Star Wars movie, I was feeling a little bit apprehensive (as one would after the dreaded prequels). But, this was the trailer that broke any and all feelings of fear and uneasiness I had. With the variations to Han and Leia’s theme and the booming sound of The Force theme that are followed by the horns blaring the original Star Wars theme, I got goosebumps. A trailer hadn’t left me smiling with utter excitement in a very long time. I may have looked like a bit of a mad man, seeing as I was at a bar when I watched it, but pfft! Screw it, I was on board and felt like a kid again. Freakin’ awesome.

*The reveal being Luke Skywalker…duh.
